Coughing

What is it about the brief pauses between movements in a classical symphony that causes so many people in the audience to cough?

Actually, people cough during the performance too. It's just that the audience is listening to the music, and rarely notice the "noise in the crowd". When there is a pause, we then notice these "noises", as there is no music to over take it.
