Event Summary

The Callanwolde Artist Market is a unique winter indoor art festival at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta’s historic Druid Hills neighborhood. The Market features over 80 artists working in a variety of media. Artists will have display spaces throughout the 1920 Callanwolde mansion.
 
The Market brings artists from around the Southeast and from Callanwolde visual arts programs. The Market is geared toward sophisticated patrons interested in original, yet affordable, art in a wide variety of media. Jurors will be very selective to ensure the highest quality of work.
 
Proceeds from booth fees and tickets support Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the Callanwolde Estate and to be the premier public participatory arts and cultural organization.

IMPORTANT DATES & DEADLINES

  • Last day for artists to cancel and receive booth fee refund: January 18, 2019 @ 5:00 p.m.
  • Wait List Released: January 18, 2019 @ 5:00 p.m. (Payment deadline is January 23, 2019 @ 5pm for waitlisted artists only.)
  • Load-in Date: January 25, 2019 (Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.) 

ARTIST CATEGORIES
Each artist must choose a category from the list below.  Artists with work in more than one category should choose a primary category, then a secondary category. Accepted artists may only show work in the category/categories approved by the jury.
  • Clay:
    Original sculptural, decorative, or functional work in which the primary material used is clay.
  • Drawing/Graphics/Printmaking: 
    Original works made with pen, pencil, color pencil, charcoal or traditional printmaking techniques, including etching, engraving lithography, serigraphy or woodcut. Combination techniques / collages are also included. Original prints must be signed and numbered.
  • Fiber/Leather: 
    Original work created from fibers or leather which includes basketry, handmade paper, weavings, and other artistic, fabric-based work. All work must be designed and sewn by the artist. No commercial, mass produced items permitted.
  • Glass:
    Original sculptural or decorative work created in glass. No mass or factory produced work is permitted.
  • Jewelry:
    Original jewelry made from precious and non-precious metals, gemstones, enamel, glass, fiber, clay or other materials. Commercial molds, casts, and kits are not permitted.  At least 90% of the materials in the finished product must be created by the artist.  Simple manufactured components such as clasps are acceptable.  
  • Metal:
    Original sculptural or decorative items created in metal. May be painted or unpainted.
  • Mixed Media: 
    Original work of two or three dimensions which incorporates the union of two or more media or physical materials. Use this category ONLY if work cannot be classified under another category.
  • Painting:
    Original work created using oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, egg tempera or similar materials on canvas, paper, or board. Combination techniques/collages of these materials are also included.
  • Photography/Digital Art: 
    Original artwork created by the artist / photographer utilizing an SLR or Digital camera, or computer-generated image, and printed with either traditional darkroom, ink-jet, or laser printing technologies. No commercial photography. Original prints must be signed and numbered. Only one framed piece of each image may be hung on the walls of the booth.
  • Wood:
    Original sculptural or decorative work made primarily from wood which includes hand tooled, carved or machine worked items, with either natural or painted finish.

ON-SITE AMENITIES
  • The Callanwolde Artist Market is entirely indoors.
  • The Market includes 70 booth spaces of various sizes and prices.
  • Snacks and water will be provided for artists throughout the event.
  • Food and beverage vendors will be on site throughout the event.
  • Booth sitters are available for short breaks during event hours upon request.
  • Convenient Thursday-Friday load-in.
  • Shuttle service to/from parking lot for artists.
  • Monitored security cameras throughout the property.

ARTIST PARKING
Participating artists may park at Callanwolde during Thursday and Friday load-in, but must park at the Emory Briarcliff campus, 1260 Briarcliff Road, during the Artist Market. Shuttles will be available to transport artists to/from Callanwolde. 
 



Rules/Regulations

Failure to follow application instructions will result in DISQUALIFICATION without refund of application fee.

ELIGIBILITY
The Callanwolde Artist Market is open only to artists who reside in the following states: Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  

STATEMENT ON ORIGINAL WORKS
All art must be original, handmade, and created by the exhibiting artist. Work produced by apprentices or employees is unacceptable. No mass production crafts, cottage industry, or handcrafted imports are accepted. Reproductions such as giclée prints must be clearly identified as such. Embellished manufactured items and items made from commercially available kits, molds, patterns, etc. are not permitted. 

The following items are prohibited from display/sale at the Callanwolde Artist Market:

  • T-shirts and commercially produced clothing
  • Food items, incense, lotions/oils, soaps, candles, or sprays
  • Mass-produced posters
  • Commercially manufactured or reproduced items (NO BUY/SELL ALLOWED)
  • Jewelry made from more than 10% commercially manufactured components


DIGITAL IMAGE REQUIREMENTS:
The Callanwolde Artist Market is using the ZAPP® online application system. Your application submission must be accompanied by eight (8) digital images of your artwork and one (1) digital image of your booth. Digital images must be current, of high quality, and show artwork completed within the past two years.  

Your booth image should not include your name, title of artworks, or people visible in the digital image, so as to remain anonymous to jurors. Failure to follow the digital image requirements will result in disqualification.

Artists may only sell work that is represented in the submitted photographs. Anyone that displays work not described on the application or represented in the photographs will be asked to remove these items. Do not display items without prior approval.

The Callanwolde Artist Market reserves the rights to use submitted images for publicity and affirmation purposes before, during and after the event.

JURY PROCESS
The jury panel will consist of experienced art professionals with knowledge and experience in multiple art disciplines. Applicants with the highest scores per category will be invited to participate. A limited number of applicants per category will be accepted to provide a balanced show. The jury process is done anonymously, and the decision of the jury is final.

NOTIFICATIONS
Notifications will be emailed to applicants on December 14, 2018. No notifications will be issued by phone, fax or US mail. Invited applicants may purchase booth spaces by the January 11, 2019 deadline. Applicants who fail to meet this payment deadline will forfeit their space.

COMMUNICATION BEFORE AND DURING EVENT
Check your email often during the event for updates on important information regarding weather, emergencies, and more.
 
SALES TAX
All participating artists are responsible for collecting the 8% sales tax for the State of Georgia and DeKalb County. A tax form will be provided in your check-in packet.
 
WAITING LIST
Wait-listed artists will be considered after the booth fee payment deadline for invited artists has passed, or in the event an invited artist declines or cancels. Artists selected from the waiting list will be given a deadline to confirm and pay the booth fee.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellations by confirmed artist participants must be received via email to cbray@callanwolde.org before 5:00 p.m. on January 11, 2019 for a refund of the booth fee.  Application fees are non-refundable. No refunds will be given for cancellations after January 11 or for no-shows.

NO-SHOW POLICY
Artists who have not checked-in by Friday, January 25 @ 12:00 p.m. will be considered a no-show and will not be eligible for refunds.  Assigned space(s) will be forfeited to artist(s) on the waiting list.

One Exhibitor per booth space; sharing of booth space is not allowed. Exhibitors cannot sublet or apportion space to anyone else. Relocating your booth is strictly prohibited.

Callanwolde provides only floor space for booth exhibits. Artists may rent 8-foot tables for $20 each (supplies limited) and may add electricity for $40.  Each artist must provide and set up his/her own display panels, shelves, lighting, etc.  

Artists must be present with their work for the duration of the Artist Market.  Each artist may bring one assistant, but no commercial agents, dealers, or salespeople may operate an artist's booth.  
 
Please present a professional appearance when setting up your booth. Tables must be skirted to the ground preferably with a fabric tablecloth, and storage boxes kept out of sight. No “sale” or “discount” signs are permitted. All work exhibited must be confined to the assigned space(s). Browsing bins should occupy minimal space and must not obstruct patron flow. All display materials must be sturdy, safe, and professional in appearance.
 
Booth must be set up and ready for business by 6:00 p.m. on January 25, 10:00 a.m. on January 26, and 11:00 a.m. on January 27.  All art on display must be for sale.

Callanwolde staff will check booths periodically throughout the Artist Market for compliance with admission requirements as set forth in this application. If you are not in compliance, you will be first warned and then asked to leave if you do not make corrections.  Booth fees will not be refunded.
 
LOAD IN/LOAD OUT
Prior to the Artist Market, artists will be notified via email of their booth/table location and detailed setup information.  Artists must set up booths on Thursday and/or Friday before the Artist Market.  All participating artists will be required to show a Photo ID upon check-in.

Thursday, January 24: 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.: Artist check-in and set-up.  Check-in is at the reception desk in the mansion.

Friday, January 25: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Artist check-in and set-up.  Check-in is at the reception desk in the mansion. 

Artists may park temporarily along the driveway, at the portico, or at the loading dock in back of the mansion to unload.  After unloading, artist vehicles must be moved to the parking lot.  Artists may then return to their booths to set up.

No set-up is allowed on Saturday morning. No artist vehicles are allowed on the property Saturday/Sunday morning.

Applicant may not break down booth/table before closing time on any day of the Artist Market.

Load-out must be completed by 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 27.  Artists may park temporarily along the driveway, at the portico, or at the loading dock in back of the mansion to load vehicles.
