Event Summary
The Sidewalk Art Show takes place annually in Roanoke, Virginia,
on the downtown streets near the Taubman Museum of Art.

Every year since 1958 the Sidewalk Art Show has celebrated and
supported the creation of original fine art, as well as provided
funds for the museum’s education and outreach programs.

The annual Sidewalk Art Show attracts thousands of visitors
who come to visit Roanoke’s historic downtown area nestled in
Virginia’s Blue Ridge, just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Sidewalk Art Show takes place annually in Roanoke, Virginia,
on the downtown streets near the Taubman Museum of Art.

General Schedule

March 17, 2017: Registration deadline

March 31, 2017: Confirmation mailed to Artists

May 5, 2017: Deadline for withdrawal with full refund (less $35 application fee)

June 2, 2017: 6 pm, Artists may begin setting up

June 3, 2017: 7 am, Check-in begins
                    10 am, Show opens (works in place)
                    10 am, Judging begins
                     5 pm, Show closes for the day
                     5:45 pm, Awards announced

June 4, 2017: 10 am, Second day begins
                        5 pm, Show closes

Cash Awards
  • Best in Show: $1500 (plus use of image for the 2018 show)
  • Second prize: $1000

Rules/Regulations
Standards & Rules
  • This is a juried show. Your participation will be reviewed by the show’s selection committee.
  • The artist is responsible for his or her art and personal effects for the duration of the show and for displays and art left overnight and throughout the weekend.
  • The Taubman Museum of Art and the Sidewalk Art Show committee do not assume responsibility for works on display or for display equipment.
  • The artist is responsible for handling sales and Virginia sales tax (5%).
  • The Taubman Museum of Art does not charge commissions.
  • Glass containers and alcohol are prohibited outside of the Museum Cafe.
  • During show hours (10am–5pm) vehicles are prohibited to enter the artist exhibition area.

Eligibility & Policies

All exhibited work must be the unique and original work of the
registered artist or craftsman. Original work must constitute
at least 75% of the display; all reproductions of your original
artwork, including giclee and offset reproductions, must be
clearly labeled as such. All non-labeled reproductions may be
subject to removal from display.

Works Not Accepted
 
Mass-produced items, novelty/mass-produced jewelry, any
item from a kit or products cast from commercial molds, live or
dried plant material, painting on velvet, candles, country-pine
furniture.

The Sidewalk Art Show committee reserves the right to remove
from display any work which, in its judgment, fails to represent the body of work provided in artist submission materials.

Submission 

Read Carefully and Note Updates
Two Options
1. Electronic Submission on zapplication.org
2. Physical Submission (digital images on single CD or flash drive.)

You need to submit a total of five (5) digital images for each category you enter:
  • Four (4) pieces of your artwork submitted must be current
  • One (1) image of a booth and display with your work

Digital quality is of the utmost importance. Consider whether your images show your work clearly and to an advantage. The images must be recent and accurately represent the body of work to be exhibited at the Sidewalk Art Show. The Taubman Museum of Art reserves the right to use imagees for Sidewalk Art Show promotional purposes.

For Physical Submission: Images may be submitted on a CD or flash drive in .jpg or .pdf format and should be a minimum of 1MB in size. Please name the images appropriately, (e.g. Lastname_WorkTitle.jpg) and do not use the original camera file name (e.g. DSC0109.jpg).

Booth Information
Exhibition Spaces
  • Only 10’x10’ tents are allowed for display, all participating artists are responsible for providing their own tents and all supplies needed to display their artwork, including tables, portfolios, wall display, etc.
  • All display materials must be kept out of the flow of traffic
You may request as many spaces as you wish. Show is held rain or shine; there are no refunds for cancellation due to weather. Artists are urged to come prepared to protect their work against inclement weather and/or heavy wind. A tarp or heavy plastic cover is suggested. The location is on city streets; therefore, artists must provide some form of anchorage for free-standing units.
