New Waves 2017, The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art's annual, juried exhibition, features work in various media by Virginia artists. New Waves promotes emerging artists by inviting them to display their work in a museum exhibition.

OPPORTUNITY FOR VIRGINIA ARTISTS: You are invited to submit works for the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MOCA) annual juried exhibition, New Waves 2018.
New Waves 2018 will be on view March 17, 2018 – August 19, 2018.
Best in Show: $2,000
Second Place: $1,000
Third Place: $500
Honorable Mentions: $250 (two awarded)
People’s Choice Award: $750

Juror: Cay-Sophie Rabinowitz (born in Norfolk, Virginia) is Director of OSMOS, a network of independent editorial and curatorial platforms based in New York. The brand OSMOS was founded in Berlin in 1997. Rabinowitz has been Senior Editor of Parkett and Artistic Director of Art Basel as well as faculty at Columbia University and Parsons. Rabinowitz has edited and published numerous monographs and critical essays on modern and contemporary art and culture. In 2011 Rabinowitz launched OSMOS Magazine to be an art quarterly “about the use and abuse of photography” wherein established practitioners are featured alongside the next generation. A recognized art world insider, Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, is known for her highly professional, yet deeply personal approach.

Fees: A non-refundable fee of $35 (credit card or Paypal) is required.
Submissions:  With the exception of video and sound work, submissions for the New Waves 2017 exhibition will be accepted through online application only.
Acceptance: MOCA will notify all accepted artists by February 16, 2018. Accepted artists will also be listed on www.VirginiaMOCA.org.

Eligibility: All artists currently residing in Virginia.

Eligible Artwork: Work in all artistic mediums and made between the years of 2013-2016 is accepted for review. Art exhibited in previous New Waves exhibitions is not eligible for review.
  • 2-D work must be ready for installation and may not exceed 84 inches in any dimension, including frame. The piece cannot exceed 75 lbs.
  • 3-D work cannot be larger than 84 inches including base and must not exceed 200 lbs.
  • Installations: MOCA will accept installations that have previously been created. Images of installations can be submitted to ZAPPlication.org as a jpeg. Submissions should be flexible to fit any location within the gallery.
  • Video and Sound Works: MOCA accepts submission of these works via regular mail for the $35 application fee.  Envelopes should be addressed in care of New Waves 2017.
    • If you are submitting other work in addition to your video, submit & pay via Zapp. Send in video with note indicating that you have already paid.
    • Up to 5 entries can be placed on one DVD. Label video with first and last name, title of video, date of work, and full running time of piece.
    • Artists should list details of installation and presentation preferences. DVD’s will be returned ONLY if an appropriately-sized self-addressed stamped envelope is included.

Zapplication requires a submission of 10 images.

  • These images can be multiple views of the same work or 10 separate works of art.
  • If you have less than 10 images that you want to submit, repeatedly enter the same image.

Artists are responsible for delivery and/or shipment to and from MOCA. Accepted works may be hand-delivered or shipped by the artist. All works must be packed properly for return shipping. Pre-paid return and/or pick-up is the responsibility of the artist. Return prepaid shipping label from UPS or FedEx should be enclosed.

Liability: MOCA will insure all work while it is on premises. Artists must provide their own incoming and outgoing shipping insurance. MOCA is not responsible for damage due to improper packing or creation of work using non-archival or unsafe materials.

Side Notes: MOCA reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any work in New Waves 2018 for publicity and educational purposes.
