Welcome to ARTSWEEK GOLDEN!

ARTSWEEK GOLDEN is a week-long celebration of the arts orchestrated by Foothills Art Center in partnership with arts-oriented organizations in beautiful Golden, Colorado. Foothills Art Center traces its roots to 1968 when a group of artists formed to renovate the historic First Presbyterian Church into a thriving regional arts center. In 2018 Foothills Art Center will celebrate its 50th Anniversary while continuing to serve artists, house creative exhibits and offer educational programming and classes for learners of all ages. 
 
The ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL will cap off the week with 2 days of featured artists from Colorado and beyond. This juried arts festival occurs on July 21-22 with an invitation-only LAUNCH PARTY the night before at Foothills Art Center. Artists booths, demonstrations, activities for kids, along with food and beer vendors will make this a fun and exciting event for all ages.

General Information

Foothills Art Center is a mission centered non-profit. We are bound to the community of artists and patrons we serve. This mission permeates everything we do; exhibitions, classes, and events. The ARTSWEEK GOLDEN and the ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL is just one more way we serve our community with a culturally rich experience. As such, all booth spaces will be reserved for participating artists only. ARTSWEEK GOLDEN corporate sponsors will be represented during ARTSWEEK GOLDEN, however, non-artists vendor booths will not be allowed. This event serves our mission of leading and inspiring our community through art, education, and cultural excellence. 
 
The City of Golden is located just 15 miles west of Denver, but is separated from the rest of the metro area by two stunning mesas and is nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Many major highways give drivers easy access to both the city and the mountains, including I-70, C470, U.S. Highway 6 and Highways 58 and 93. The city is located at an elevation of 5,675 feet and it covers 9 square miles, which includes 9 miles of bike lanes and 29 miles of bicycle/pedestrian trails. 
 
ARTIST AGREEMENT:
Each Participating Artist must complete and submit an agreement (the Artist Agreement”) setting forth the rules and regulations of the ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL (the Festival Rules”) and defining the rights and obligations of Foothills Art Center and the Participating Artist with regard to Festival participation. The Artist Agreement will be provided in the packet of materials sent to accepted artists.

REQUIREMENTS:
Images: 5 - A booth shot IS required. Please do not submit blurry images, images with superimposed text, or images that identify the artists name.
Artist Statement: This text should describe material and technique that explains the body of work well AND a range of value for the work that the artist will be bringing. 
Application Fee: $30.00 (Limit of 4 applications total)
Booth Fee: $395 due by March 26, 2018 (Double Booth Fees are $650 and based on availability and first-come first-served)

DATES AND DEADLINES: 
All artists who have been accepted and elect to participate in the ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL must submit booth fee payments, an executed Artist Agreement, and a copy of their photo ID through ZAPP by 11:59 pm MST on March 26, 2018. Artists who have been accepted but have not submitted all acceptance materials by the acceptance deadline will forfeit their acceptance to the Festival.

ARTISTS AMENITIES AND SUPPORT:
  • All invited artists receive:
    • Invitation to the ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL LAUNCH PARTY on Friday, July 20 at Foothills Art Center
    • Access to a private hospitality tent with complimentary water and snacks during Festival days with coffee and pastries during the mornings. This tent is open during all operating hours of the Festival and includes electricity for charging devices if needed. 
    • Reserved parking for artists near the Festival site. 
    • Listing in the official Festival program with a full-color thumbnail image and listing of each participant 
    • Website listing with artist images and links to the artist website. 
    • A marketing package that you can customize for use in your own marketing efforts (this will be provided by May 15, 2018). 
    • Access to an Artist Concierge” during the festival to provide breaks and assistance as needed. 
    • The WELCOME PACK” which includes: 
      • An identifying lanyard and badge for artists (and their helper/spouse/partner/etc.)  that will grant free access to cultural institutions in and around Golden during ARTSWEEK GOLDEN (July 16-22, 2018). 
      • A Welcome Letter that includes a site map and one centralized phone number to text 24/7 if you have any questions or need assistance during the festival. 
      • A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. 
      • A booth assignment and signage. 
      • A clear and easy to understand guide for filing all state and local taxes after the event. 

MARKETING:
Although ARTSWEEK GOLDEN is new, the team behind it is not. Members of the committee include individuals who have been heavily involved in the Golden arts scene for more than two decades along with the staff of Foothills Art Center, a Golden institution that will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2018. With a PR team that includes the former communications director and PR manager for Visit Denver, ARTSWEEK GOLDEN will heavily pursue marketing opportunities throughout the Denver Metro region including TV interviews, blogs, events calendars and more. We’re open to pursuing new and creative ideas and add-on events that will help ARTSWEEK GOLDEN be attractive to a broad audience, from millennials to boomers. We are committed to working closely with all of our program partners and participating artists to ensure the event is a success - and great fun - for the artists, the volunteers and the people who come to enjoy it. 
 
APPLICATIONS:
Applications for artists are available through the Zapplication.com website for a fee of $30 per application. Each $30 fee is for a single media category.  
  • Artists interested in applying in more than one media category may submit multiple applications with a single profile up to a limit of 4 applications per artist and must remit the $30 fee per application. Multiple applications utilizing the same images will not be considered. Artists whose work is selected in multiple media categories must still exhibit in the same booth space.
  • Please complete the application fully, including the artist statement, process, edition size and information about the images submitted.
  • This is a blind jury process -- do not submit images, statements, and/or descriptions of artwork with the name or images of the artist/company. Applications in violation of this requirement will be disqualified and removed prior to jury review.
  • Five images representative of the quality and style of an artist’s body of work to be exhibited at the Festival are required per application and must include a booth shot. 
  • Artists may only exhibit in the media categories in which they have been accepted.

ELIGIBILITY:
The Festival is open to individual or co-artists selling his/her/their original artwork in a variety of mediums (for more information, see eligible media categories). No dealers, proxies, agents or representatives are permitted. Participating Artists must be onsite during all public hours of the Festival. No clubs, organizations, or shared booths will be allowed. Foothills Art Center reserves the right to extend invitations to selected artists.
 
ELIGIBLE MEDIA CATEGORIES:
Media categories are used by the Festival as a tool for organizing artists’ images into logical, related groups for the jury’s review. While a balanced show that equitably showcases both works of fine art and fine craft as well as diversity among media is a principal objective, the Festival establishes no quota or entitlement by media category.
 
Ceramics: All original clay and porcelain work other than jewelry is accepted in this category. No machine-made or mass-produced work is permitted. If multiple pieces of the same design are displayed each piece must be signed.
 
Digital Art: This category includes any original work for which the original image, or the manipulation of other source material, was executed by the artist using a computer. Work in this category must be in limited editions, signed and numbered on archival quality materials. Traditional photographs taken through a digital media should apply in the photography category.
 
Drawing: Works created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayon, etc. or from the fluid medium of inks and washes applied by pen or brush are to be entered in this category.
 
Fiber: All work crafted from fibers including basketry, embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, tapestry and papermaking. This can be wearable or non-wearable. No machine tooling, machine-screened patterns or other forms of mass production are permitted. No factory produced wearable items, regardless of additional modification or enhancement by the artist, may be exhibited.
 
Glass: Functional or decorative which are kiln formed, or crafted by glass blowing, molding, or casting.  Works may be etched or engraved.  No forms of mass production or alterations of prefabricated objects, i.e. pressed wine bottles, are permitted.  This category excludes jewelry made from glass.
 
Jewelry: All jewelry whether the work is produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic or other materials must be entered in this category. No commercial casts, molds or production studio work is allowed.
  
Metalworks: Includes all non-sculptural, non-jewelry works crafted from metals. No production studio work is allowed.
 
Mixed Media: This category includes works, both 2 and 3-dimensional, that incorporate more than one type of physical material to produce. Includes non-sculptural work as determined by the artist.
 
Painting: Works created in oils, acrylics, watercolor, etc. are in this category. Reproductions of all kinds are prohibited.
 
Photography: Photographic prints made from the artist’s original image, which have been processed by that artist, or under his or her direct supervision, are included in this category. Photographers are required to disclose both their creative and printing processes.
 
Printmaking: Printed works for which the artist’s hand manipulated the plates, stones or screens and which have been properly signed and numbered as a limited edition may be entered in this category. All photogravure, photocopy and/or offset reproductions, will be rejected. Printmakers are required to disclose both their creative and printmaking processes. 
 
Sculpture: Three-dimensional original work done in any medium, regardless of size.
 
Upcycled/Recycled - Works that have been transformed from by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or objects of better quality.
 
Wood: Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine-worked, turned or carved are accepted in the wood category.
 
JURY PROCESS:
  • Each year a new selection committee of 3 jurors will be selected to score art submissions. The jury consists of art experts, including collectors, gallery owners and local artists. Foothills Art Center staff and board of directors do not participate in this process. 
  • Artists' images are scored by our jury panel on a point system. Jurors are given one week to view the applications on their own schedule.  Each juror sees only the 5 images and Artist Statement online via computer screen monitor and scores the images independent of other jurors.
  • Artwork is considered solely on the images pictured high quality images are recommended.
  • The Artist Statement should describe material and technique that explains the body of work well AND a range of value for the work that the artist will be bringing. 
  • This is a blind jury process -- do not submit images, statements, and/or descriptions of artwork with the name or images of the artist/company. Applications in violation of this requirement will be disqualified and removed prior to jury review.
  • Artists are selected based on the highest cumulative jury scores in their media category. A wait-list of additional artists is based on jury scores and used for replacement purposes. The exact number of accepted and waitlisted artists may vary; however, we anticipate being able to accommodate around 125 artists. 
  • The notification date is March 16, 2018. 
  • Decisions by the jury panel are final.
 
AWARDS:
Awards will be selected by the 3-person jury panel on Saturday morning, July 21st. Awards will be presented at 2pm and all awardees are guaranteed automatic entry during the 2019 ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL in the media category in which they were accepted. Award winners will have the 2019 application fee waived and the booth fee will be 50% off. However, applications, Artist Agreements, and booth fees must be submitted and adhere to the published deadlines.

Rules/Regulations

ON-SITE REQUIREMENTS & SALES:
  • All artwork exhibited at the Festival must be of the quality and style represented by the Participating Artist in images submitted with the application as well as of the media category for which they are accepted.
  • Participating Artists must provide or rent their canopy tent.
  • All Participating Artists shall agree to comply with the ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL Rules and all local, state and federal rules for safety.
  • Participating Artists must keep all displays, storage and chairs within the confines of their booth space.  Participating Artists are responsible to present a clean and tidy space all cardboard and storage containers must be removed from the festival corridor prior to the start of the event.
  • Participating Artists must be present during the entire Festival and, with the exception of instances in which the booth is watched by an Artist Concierge provided by the Festival, Participating Artists must personally staff their booth space. No agents, dealers or representatives may attend the Festival in place of the Participating Artist.  Photo identification is required at check-in. In addition, the Festival staff reserves the right to check ID at any time.
  • Participating Artists are not allowed to keep pets at their booths at any time during the Festival. 
  • Booth and display must be open and remain intact during all public hours of the show.
  • Artists retain all revenue from the sale of their work.
  • Artists are responsible for paying sales tax to the State of Colorado and the City of Golden in a timely manner. Those who fail to meet this obligation will be allowed to return for future events. 

ORIGINAL ARTWORK REGULATION:
All art must be original, handcrafted work. No commercial, mass produced or manufactured work will be accepted. The artist, upon submission of images, guarantees the accuracy of the description of artwork presented and the authenticity of the artwork as original and created by his/her own hands. The ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL reserves the right to reject any displays or items not in keeping with the character of the images submitted.
 
REPRODUCTION REGULATION:
A reproduction is defined as any existing work of art that is copied by digital or photographic means and printed on an offset press, a serigraph press or through a computer by means of an ink jet or electrostatic printer. This definition includes giclée prints and reproductions with additional enhancements by the artist. 2-dimensional reproductions are allowed under the following provisions:
  • Prints are labeled as such.
  • Prints are signed and offered in a limited quantity.
  • Prints may make up 20% or less of the artwork exhibited in each booth (Photography, Printmaking and Digital Arts categories are exempt).

SECURITY
The ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL will provide 24-hour general security at the event site through a private security firm. Participating Artists exhibit all works at their own risk.  Foothills Art Center, and its representatives are not responsible for any damage, theft or loss of artwork, display materials, or other booth contents. Although not required, we recommend exhibitors carry insurance for their works as an additional level of security.  

WEATHER:
The ARTSWEEK GOLDEN FESTIVAL is an outdoor show at 5,675’ elevation in the beautiful town of Golden, Colorado. The weather can vary significantly throughout the day and storms and strong winds can appear suddenly.  The Festival will take place rain or shine.  No refunds will be given due to adverse or unexpected weather. It is the Participating Artists’ responsibility to protect their works and other personal property from rain, wind or other weather-related conditions.
 

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUND POLICY:
Cancellations must be made in writing, through email. To be eligible for a refund, please email your request to info@artsweekgolden.org with CANCELLATION in the subject line. If cancellations are received:

  • On or after June 22, 2018 - There is no refund of the booth fee. 
  • Between March 27, 2018 and June 21, 2018 - There is a 50% refund of the booth fee. 


Booth Information

BOOTH INFO:
Accepted artists will submit booth fee payments along with their other Acceptance Materials through ZAPP. 
  • A non-refundable application and jury fee of $30.00 is payable through Zapplication and the Booth Fee is $395. Double Booth Fee: $790 (based on availability and first come, first serve).
  • Each booth space allows for one exhibitor. Booth space can only be shared by artists who collaborate to create the work on display. 
  • Booth fees cover the 10’ x 10’ (or 10’ x 20’ for double booths) space only.
  • All booth requests are subject to availability and are assigned at FAC’s discretion.
  • Participating Artists must provide or rent their own tent and materials to display their work in an outdoor environment. Tents must be fire-safe and are REQUIRED to be adequately weighted to provide a minimum of 40lbs PER LEG of your booth. Weights must be secured immediately upon setting up the tent/canopy. Although not a requirement, we strongly recommend that you provide a tent with sides that can be closed. 
  • Artists tents will be on the Colorado School of Mines campus adjacent to Foothills Art Center and 15th Street. The location on grass, allows for great pedestiran access, and there are several parking lots in close proximity. The area is fairly level; however, no location is perfectly level. Participating artists should be prepared with leveling devices if needed. 
  • Electricity and running water are not available.
  • Set-up times will be on July 20th and July 21st before the Festival. Tear down is Sunday, July 22 starting at 6pm. 

SALES AND TAX INFORMATION:
  • Participating Artists retain all revenue from the sale of their work.
  • Taxes must be paid to the Colorado Department of Revenue and City of Golden at the conclusion of the Festival. Information on how to remit these taxes will be found in the packet that artists receive in May and again in the Welcome Pack received upon check-in.
