Event Summary

The Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is distinguished from other art shows by two important differences.  First, only original non-functional fine art is accepted. Secondly, the show is produced by a non-profit organization of fellow exhibiting artists.  The entire Board of Director's exhibit in the show which institutes a vested interest in creating a successful event.  This is illustrated in our 91-year history, making the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show the oldest continuous outdoor art show in the nation.

We cap the number of professional artist spaces at 143.  The venue is the sidewalk perimeter circling Rittenhouse Square in Center City Philadelphia. Rittenhouse Square is a prestigious park setting in the downtown area.  It is surrounded by some of the most luxurious residential addresses in Philadelphia.  The show has consistently attracted an affluent, culturally educated clientele. 
In short, if you are a fine artist interested in a well run urban show that offers an arts savvy audience, a beautiful venue, a supportive arts community of fellow high quality exhibitors,  then the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Shows should be part of your schedule.

General Information

Application Fee is $35.00   
Payment of the Application fee can be made in two ways. You can pay online through Zapplication or by mailing a check. Application fees sent by check or money order should be made payable to RSFAA (Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Association) and mailed to RSFAA, PO Box 2055, Philadelphia, PA 19103-0055. The check must be accompanied with a printed copy of your application confirmation. Applications will not be processed until the application fee is received. Checks will be deposited upon receipt and are non-refundable.
This is an originals only fine art show. Only non-functional original work created by the artist may be shown and all work must be for sale. No reproductions may be shown or promoted.  All work displayed must be of the same or better quality than the work submitted to the jury process.  For more information, please read UNACCEPTABLE TYPES OF WORK under Rules/Regulations.
The following is a list and explanation of the categories of art acceptable for jury.
Any two-dimensional works created in either oils or acrylics.
Any two-dimensional works created in watercolors, gouache or tempera paint.
Any printed works for which the artist has manipulated the plates, stones, or screens. These works must also be printed by the artist and not an associate or helper. In addition, printmakers are required to disclose their creative process and printing technique. All prints must be signed and numbered as a limited edition.
Any two-dimensional works created using a dry medium, including pencil, graphite, charcoal, wax crayons or pastels.
Nonfunctional three-dimensional work created in any media.
Mixed Media
Two- or three-dimensional work that incorporates more than one type of physical material or medium.
Each exhibiting artist must complete an online application with only one artist per entry, unless you are entering as collaborating artists. Applying in different mediums requires a separate application.  Each submitted application must include an application fee and a unique set of images. (Applications for different mediums may not use the same set of images.)
The Jury Process
This competitive show is limited to 143 exhibitors chosen by a jury of highly qualified 2D and 3D fine artists. Decisions of the jury are based on the quality, uniqueness, consistency and professionalism of the artwork. 
Digital Images
Five (5) images are to be submitted for each individual medium category entered by the artists: four (4) images must be of individual pieces of artwork created within the last 2 years and the fifth (5th) must be a CURRENT booth image showing the overall continuity and professional presentation of the artist’s current body of work. The jury needs to see both the booth display and work similar to the work that will be displayed at the show.
Note: The booth image is mandatory.
DO NOT submit booth images with any identifiable sign or photo of the artist (jury points can and will be deducted for failing to follow this direction.)  
DO NOT send a virtual booth image.  Virtual booth images will not be accepted.
DO NOT send a booth image that doesn’t represents your current body of work or your current display.  We want to see a current booth image of the work you plan exhibit.  Failure to comply will be considered sufficient reason for disqualification. 

BOOTH IMAGES must:    
  1. Be Current.
  2. Be An Outdoor Setup.
  3. Contain work like the work you submitted for your jury images.
BOOTH IMAGE must NOT:     
  1. Contain names or signage of the artist.
  2. Be Virtual.
  3. Be an Indoor Setup.
  4. Contain a different type of body of work than you submitted for jury.
Collaborating Artists 
“Collaborating artists” is defined as two (2) artists that work together on any one piece of art. If two artists collaborate, it is regarded as one joint entry. If accepted, all work exhibited must be collaborative.  Both artists will be required to be present at the show.
Multiple Mediums
If you wish to apply in more than one medium, a separate application fee and a different set of images must be submitted for the additional category.  Artists may submit as many applications as they want.
If you wish to exhibit in more than one medium at the show,you must apply and be accepted in both mediums.  Starting in 2019, artists will no longer be able to bring a percentage of other types of artwork in a second medium, unless you were accepted in that second medium.  

A waitlist will be developed based on jury scores. Artists placed on the waitlist will be chosen and notified as cancellations are received. Should you be placed on the waitlist, you will be given the opportunity to accept or decline the invitation to exhibit if or when an opening arises.
We have staggered the set up times to relieve the vehicle congestion and the stress of setting up.  Loading and unloading are done by parking near your booth, next to the curb of the perimeter sidewalk which goes around the Square. No vehicles are permitted inside the Square at any time. Artists who are assigned spaces at the corners of the park are authorized to pull their vehicles up on to the sidewalk for safety reasons. All others are forbidden from doing so. You are asked to unload and remove your vehicle prior to setting up your display. Being allowed to park on the street to unload and load is a courtesy given by the Philadelphia Parking Authority and is only available from 7:30 to 10:45 AM. In the evening, break down your display and then bring your vehicle to the curb for loading. No one should have a vehicle at the curb before closing time each day. However, you should be packed up and ready to leave as soon as possible.
The show will open rain or shine, and all artists are expected to have their booths open during all show hours. You  should be prepared to protect yourself and your work in the event of rain or wind. We take this seriously and non-compliance can result in exclusion from our shows for a minimum of 2 years. If the weather turns severe, the Board reserves the right to close the show for safety reasons.
Because we are nestled in a city park surrounded by high-rises, wind can be amplified.  Ample weights are required on each leg of your tent.  No staking or tying off to existing structures is allowed. 
RSFAA has contracted with the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police to provide off-duty police officers during the show. Each night there will be 5 officers patrolling the park in addition to the regular on-duty officers assigned to the area. In addition, we will have 5 more officers patrolling the park during the day. Display panels and canopies may remain up overnight. It is suggested and advisable to remove your artwork from your booth each night to eliminate the risk of damage or theft. In all cases, exhibitors will be responsible for their own space and property. Leaving anything in your space is done at the artist’s discretion. RSFAA claims no responsibility. Security should be considered a deterrent and provides no guarantee that damage, theft or vandalism will be prevented.
As an exhibiting artist at the Rittenhouse, you must take extra steps to be compliant with the City of Philadelphia code and the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania:  Due to the frequent changes made in these requirements, we make every effort to keep our website updated with tax information.  Visit www.rittenhousesquareart.com for more info.

No Reproductions 
No reproductions of any kind may be shown, displayed, sold or promoted at this event.  Only original artwork is allowed.  Excluded work includes, but is not limited to: photography, calendars, note cards, digital or computer-generated art, posters, books, or limited-edition print reproductions, including work created using stencils, creating almost identical multiples or a similar theme of assembly line and/or production work.  
No Functional Work 
No functional work of any kind may be shown, displayed or sold at this event.  Excluded work includes, but is not limited to: jewelry, t-shirts, plates, cups, bowls, clothing, hats, pottery, vases, vessels, jars, dishes, lamps or furniture and mirrors.
Artists who cancel 60 days prior to a show will receive a 75% refund of the booth fee.  After this date, refunds will only be considered if requested and extenuating circumstances are presented in writing.  These circumstances will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and a decision will be made whether or not a refund will be given.
Below are rules and regulations to follow during the show. Please read each of them carefully. Although they may seem insignificant, they must be taken seriously.
1. Artists MUST be present all three days of the Show from the opening to the closing. No commercial      dealers, agents, friends or relatives are permitted to represent the artist. The Show reserves the right to close down or remove any booth in which the artist is not present.
  2.  Artists may NOT unload or set up their booth the designated times on Thursday afternoon or evening.
  3.  All work must be the artist’s original work and all artwork must be available for sale.
  4.  No Items may be priced for less than $35.
  5.  No Items or boxes can be stored inside the park over the perimeter fence throughout the show.
  6.  No sticks, spikes or tent stakes may be driven into the ground. 
  7.  There is no tying off to the fence.
  8.  All artists are responsible for picking up trash around their display area.
  9.  Electricity is not provided.
10.  All booths must face the street, except booths in the corners of the park.
11.  Displays must be professional in appearance.
12.  All extra boxes, supplies, extra work, etc. must be kept out of sight.
13.  Booths must be set up and ready for business by 11:00 AM.
14.  Artists are expected to be punctual and open for business on time.
15.  Exhibitors may not display ribbons, awards or prizes received at previous shows.
16.  Artists who misrepresent their work will be dismissed from the show and forfeit all fees.
17.  Artists will be responsible for obtaining their own insurance if desired.
18.  No artwork from molds, kits, or other commercial methods is allowed. Ready-made objects (i.e., clothing, furniture) which have been embellished, painted, decorated, dyed, or batiked will not be accepted.
19.  No offset reproductions or giclee prints of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs or any other media may be exhibited or sold (including hand-colored or “embellished” reproductions). This includes work created using stencils creating almost identical multiples or a similar theme of assembly line and/or production work. 
20.  No posters, postcards, t-shirts, books or personal merchandise can be sold at the show.
21.  Artists who break down displays or depart before closing time on any day of the show will not be allowed to return the following day or to future shows.
22.  All artists are responsible for collecting and paying the State of Pennsylvania and the City of Philadelphia sales tax.  More info at www.rittenhousesquareart.com.
23.  Artists are responsible for obtaining any permits needed to conduct business in Philadelphia.
24.  Artists are required to have sufficient weights to secure their booth against any wind.
25.  Each artist is expected to clean up their booth space after teardown, before they leave the park. 
26:  There is No Smoking in or out of the park.  This is a City of Philadelphia rule. 

Any breach of the rules forfeits all rights of the artist and will result in immediate removal from the show without a refund and/or possible exclusion from future shows.

Booth Information

All booth spaces are on a concrete sidewalk which surrounds the perimeter of the park, with each booth space measuring no less than 10’ x 10’.  Most spaces will share an additional 5’ space, located between every other space. This 5’ space is to be shared by you and your neighbor and used as exhibit space or storage during the show.  Some end booths may not have this extra 5’. 
Double booths are not available.  All tents, canopies, display panels, etc. must be freestanding. Nothing can be tied off to the fences, trees, posts, etc. around the Square and no stakes can be put in the ground. All booths and displays should be secured in place by weights. Expect medium to strong winds.

Standard Booth Fee: $475 (single booth). No double booths are available at this show.
