Event Summary
Now in its 56th year, the award-winning Uptown Art Fair invites you to apply to join us August 2 - 4, 2019 in the heart of Uptown Minneapolis, MN. The event footprint is located at the intersection of Lake and Hennepin, the center of a lively, upbeat business district and is the busiest intersection in the State of Minnesota. Over $2.1 million of art is sold during the festival with some artists sharing that the Uptown Art Fair is the most successful show of the season, and in some cases, of their career.  Attendance was reported in 2018 of 325,000 over the three day event.  Approximately 350 artists will be invited to exhibit this year.

UPTOWN ART FAIR OVERVIEW
Please read this prospectus in its entirety. Artists applying are responsible for the information contained herein. The show reserves the right to refuse any application and rescind an extended invitation should the artist misrepresent himself or herself.

Location: Uptown Minneapolis is an eclectic mix of commercial, retail, and residential properties in South Minneapolis. The intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue is the center of a lively, upbeat business district and is one of the busiest intersections in the state of Minnesota.


Features: The primary focus of the Uptown Art Fair is the juried exhibition of gallery quality fine art. Additionally, the event offers family activities including a youth art fair, entertainment, beer gardens, high quality outdoor food vending, a Culinary Arts Competition, and hands-on activities.


Achievements: The Uptown Art Fair is the winner of over 140 International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) Pinnacle Awards. The Pinnacles recognize the highest quality in promotional programs and materials produced by IFEA’s more than 3,000 member festivals and events around the world. They are the most prestigious awards in the special events industry. In addition to its IFEA recognition, Art Fair Sourcebook ranked the Uptown Art Fair the 8th best fine art event in the nation, The Harris Guide ranked it the #1 Art Fair in Minnesota, and in 2013 ArtFairCalendar.com awarded the Uptown Art Fair with Best Art Fair in the Midwest.


Attendance: An average of 350,000 people attend annually, making the Uptown Art Fair No. 2 in statewide attendance, second only to the Minnesota State Fair.


Mission: The vision of the Uptown Art Fair is to bring art to the people, draw visitors to Uptown, and provide a showcase and sales outlet for both professional and amateur artists from around the country. As the Uptown Association’s primary fundraising event, the Uptown Art Fair is an economic engine for the community, generating revenue that pays for Uptown projects including community clean ups, marketing and education seminars, donations to local causes and neighborhood organizations, and other community building activities.

FEES
Application Fee: $45
Booth Fee: $550 (single booth); $1,100 (double booth)

Checks, money orders, Visa, American Express and MasterCard are accepted. Returned checks and credit cards for insufficient funds will be charged a $40 fee, after which only money orders or cashier checks will be accepted. CHECK AND MONEY ORDER PAYMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED WITHIN 5 DAYS OF APPLICATION SUBMISSION. APPLICANTS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WILL NOT BE JURIED.

Award-winning invited artists must apply by February 1, 2019 and send in booth fees by May 1, 2019. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of booth space and the right to sell.


2019 UPTOWN ART FAIR IMPORTANT DATES
  • February 1 - Application deadline at midnight (CST); Invited artist applications due. APPLICATIONS IN PROGRESS, BUT NOT SUBMITTED BY MIDNIGHT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  • March 1 - March 17: Jury in Progress
  • April 1 - Jury results e-mailed with contracts
  • May 1 - Booth Fee AND Contract due; ST-19 with Sales Tax ID number must accompany fee and contract. Booth assignments are determined on a first-come, first-served basis, based on when fees received.
  • May 15 - Deadline for cancellation with FULL REFUND. Cancellation must be in writing, e-mails sufficient.
  • June 1 - Exhibit space assigned (NOTE: date subject to change); Deadline for cancellation with 50% REFUND. Cancellation must be in writing, e-mails sufficient.
  • July 1 - Deadline for cancellation with 25% REFUND. Cancellation must be in writing, e-mails sufficient. NOTE: REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GIVEN AFTER JULY 1.
  • August 1 - Mall booth spaces set up
  • August 2 - Hennepin Avenue booth spaces set up
  • August 2 - 4, 2019 - Uptown Art Fair; Friday: Noon - 8 pm; Saturday: 10 am - 8 pm; Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm

CHECKLIST

MARKETING
The Uptown Art Fair works to market our artists through many different channels, including:
  • The Uptown Art Fair Event Program - Designed in-house, this program lists each artist by media, showcasing booth numbers and hometowns. Ad space is available for purchase at a very low cost. 
  • Social Media - We feature artists through our various social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc) and often interact with artists who engage with us through these media. 
  • We work with local and national media channels to cover the Uptown Art Fair and our artists- Media coverage for the 2018 Uptown Art Fair was valued at almost $50 million with over 48 stories done on TV!


MEDIA CATEGORIES
While a balanced show that showcases fine art and diversity of media is a principal objective, the Uptown Art Fair does not establish a quota in each media category. IF COMPUTER MANIPULATION IS USED IN THE CREATION OF WORK, IT MUST BE DIVULGED IN THE “DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE” SECTION OF YOUR APPLICATION- FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
 
2-D MIXED MEDIA
Two-dimensional works that incorporate more than one type of physical material in their production.
3-D MIXED MEDIA
Three-dimensional works that incorporate more than one type of physical material in their production.
CERAMICS
All original clay and porcelain work other than jewelry. No machine made or mass produced work is permitted. If multiple pieces of the same design are displayed, each piece must be signed.
DRAWING
Works created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayons, etc. or from fluid media of inks and washes applied by pen or brush.
FIBER
All works crafted from fibers including leather, paper, basketry, embroidery, weaving, tapestry and papermaking. Machine tooling, machine screened patterns or miscellaneous forms of mass production are NOT permitted. No factory produced wearable items, regardless of additional modification or enhancement by the artists, will be accepted.
GLASS
Glass works that may be functional or purely decorative in design. Works that have been crafted via glass blowing, molding, or casting, as well as works that have been kiln-formed. Works may be etched or engraved. No form of mass production is permitted.
JEWELRY
All jewelry, whether the work is produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic or other materials. No commercial casts, molds, mass production, or production studio work allowed.
PAINTING
Works created in oils, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographic prints made from artist’s original negative that have been processed by the artist or under his/her direct supervision. Photographers are required to disclose their creative process and printing process. USE OF COMPUTER MANIPULATION MUST BE DIVULGED IN APPLICATION. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION.
PRINTMAKING
Printed works for which the artist hand-manipulated the plates, stones, or screens. Prints must be signed and numbered as a limited edition. Printmakers are required to disclose their creative process and printing process.
SCULPTURE
Three-dimensional original work created in any media.
WOOD
Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine worked, turned or carved.

JURY PROCESS
ALL IMAGES MUST BE ANONYMOUS AND CANNOT INCLUDE IDENTIFYING MARKINGS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO SIGNATURES, NAME STAMPS, COMPANY NAMES, OR PHOTOS OF THE ARTIST. APPLICANTS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS REQUIREMENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THEIR APPLICATIONS. REFUSAL TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE JURY PROCESS.

Approximately 350 artists will exhibit in the 2019 show. The 2018 award winners in each media are invited first, with the remaining slots filled through a competitive jury process. 

Each artist is required to submit a total of five (5) images (four images of work and one booth image) along with a $45 NON-REFUNDABLE jury fee per media. All work to be exhibited must be represented in the images. Each of the four images should feature individual pieces that accurately represent the body of work to be exhibited; work shown in the images must be representative of current work, and no more than five years old.

Images are reviewed by the panel in a blind jury process with multiple rounds. To make the process as fair as possible, the identities of artists are not disclosed to jurors. ALL IMAGES MUST BE ANONYMOUS AND CANNOT INCLUDE IDENTIFYING MARKINGS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO SIGNATURES, NAME STAMPS, COMPANY NAMES, OR PHOTOS OF THE ARTIST. APPLICANTS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS REQUIREMENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THEIR APPLICATIONS. REFUSAL TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION FROM THE JURY PROCESS.

Artists may apply ONCE per media. Collaborating artists (defined as “Artist Partner” on ZAPP™) may apply to participate at the event, but only joint work may be shown and sold and both artists must be present for the duration of the event. Both names must appear on all application materials and both artists must contribute to the creation of the art pieces.

Rules/Regulations
  • ALL WORK MUST BE ORIGINAL, HANDCRAFTED WORK. Artist guarantees the accuracy of the description of the works presented and the authenticity of the work as the creation of their own hands
  • WORK DONE BY A PRODUCTION STUDIO IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. All work must be designed and executed by the exhibiting artist.
  • TECHNIQUE MUST BE DIVULGED IN APPLICATION IN THE “DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE” SECTION. Failure to do so may result in disqualification- particularly in the case of computer manipulation.
  • IT IS THE ARTIST’S RESPONSIBILITY TO IDENTIFY THE CATEGORY FOR WHICH THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE JURIED. Please choose the category which best describes your work. If you do not choose a category (media) your application will not be processed.
Collaboration
  • Collaborating artists (defined as “Artist Partner” on ZAPP™) may exhibit only their collaborating work(s). BOTH ARTISTS MUST BE ON-SITE DURING ALL 3 DAYS OF THE FAIR.
Exhibiting
  • ALL EXHIBITING AND COLLABORATING ARTISTS (DEFINED AS “ARTIST PARTNER” ON ZAPP™) AGREE TO BE PRESENT DURING ALL SHOW HOURS, ALL THREE DAYS. Representatives may not attend in place of the artist. Photo identification required to ensure compliance.
  • 33% OF ALL 2-DIMENSIONAL WORK DISPLAYED MUST BE ORIGINAL. Artist must define reproduction or limited edition throughout their artist statement and disclose this information on individual pieces. Postcards, note cards, posters, mouse pads, or any other offset reproductions are not permitted.
  • EXHIBITING ARTISTS ARE REQUIRED TO DISPLAY AN ARTIST STATEMENT in a prominent place within their booths describing how the work is made and the materials used.
  • WORK EXHIBITED MUST BE CONSISTENT WITH SLIDES SUBMITTED AND OF COMPARABLE QUALITY. Artists will be asked to remove or store work not adhering to this policy.
  • ARTISTS MAY ONLY EXHIBIT AND SELL WORK IN THE MEDIA CATEGORY FOR WHICH THEY ARE ACCEPTED.
  • ARTISTS MAY NOT SHOW IN OTHER FAIRS, EXHIBITIONS, OR EVENTS IN MINNEAPOLIS taking place at the same time as the Uptown Art Fair.
  • ARTISTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROPER INSURANCE AND PROTECTION OF WORK AND SETUP. The Uptown Art Fair is not responsible for loss or damage.
  • ALL WORK MUST BE FOR SALE. Artists retain 100% of their sales and are responsible for the collection and reporting of applicable sales tax.


Booth Information
Individual booth assignments are made to create an appealing mix of media. Assignments are at the sole discretion of the Uptown Art Fair and are not interchangeable or transferable. Each artist is assigned a 10’ x 10’ space. Priority for booth assignments is given to 2018 Best of Show winners. Booths not assigned to re-invited artists are assigned first-come, first-served, based on when fees are received. Artists will not be assigned a space until completed contract materials are received via email.
