Event Summary
The Crested Butte Arts Festival will be August  2-4 , 2019. Approximately 165 artists will line Historic Elk Avenue - nestled in the majestic Rocky Mountains. Sales at this show continue to increase as word spreads about the quality of artists exhibiting after a very competitive jury process. The Crested Butte Arts Festival is gaining national attention and sponsorship and draws a savvy, sophisticated art-buying clientele.

The charming and eclectic Town of Crested Butte, a National Historic District, is the venue for this outdoor show. Admission and parking are free and entertainment, children's programs,  and live art demonstrations are scheduled throughout the weekend. Truly one of the industry's best kept secrets, the Crested Butte Arts Festival must be experienced to be believed!

General Information

IMPORTANT DATES:

March 1, 2019: Application deadline

April 2019: 5 member jury convenes in Crested Butte, CO and selects approximately 165 artists to exhibit

Mid-April 2019: Notification (by email and website. Please do not call.)
1. 165 artists who received the top scores will receive an invitation to exhibit.
2. An additional 75 artists who received high scores but were not invited to exhibit will serve as alternates and will be notified of their alternate status.

May 28 2019: Deadline for accepted artists to commit to exhibit, return a signed exhibitor contract and remit booth fee. BOOTH FEES ARE $386 STANDARD, $465 CORNER, $773 DOUBLE, AND $824 DOUBLE CORNER. Failure to communicate with show director by this date will result in the forfeiture of invitation.

June 7, 2019: Deadline for artists to cancel and receive a full refund on booth fees.

MEDIA CATEGORIES:
As the CB Arts Festival has recently made changes to the categories for application, the following is provided for clarification purposes for artists. While we strive to present a well balanced show, no quotas are enforced for any medium and artists are judged solely on artistic excellence. Artists may apply in more than one category, but must submit separate applications and jury fees for each medium.

CERAMICS
Original clay and porcelain work, other than jewelry, will be accepted in this category. No machine or mass-produced items will be accepted.

DIGITAL ART
Original works of digital art can be purely computer-generated, or achieved through the manipulation of other source materials or images by the artist using a computer. Work in this category must be in limited editions of 250 or less, signed and numbered. Traditional photographs taken through a digital media should apply in the PHOTOGRAPHY CATEGORY.

DRAWING & GRAPHIC ARTS
Includes works created using dry media including pencil, chalk, charcoal, pastels, wax crayon, etc., or from the fluid medium of inks and washes applied by pen or brush. In addition, printed works in which the artist hand-manipulates the plates, stones or screens, and which have been signed and numbered as a limited edition, should be entered in this category.

FIBER
Includes artwork from fibers such as basketry, embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, tapestry and papermaking. This work can be wearable or non-wearable. No mass or factory-produced work is allowed.

GLASS
Functional or decorative glass works, which are kiln formed or crafted by glass blowing, molding or casting. Works may be etched or engraved. No forms of mass production and no alterations of prefabricated glass objects, i.e., pressed wine bottles, are permitted. This category excludes JEWELRY fabricated from glass.

JEWELRY
All jewelry, without limitation regarding the range of materials or processes used, is to be entered in this category. Works should be wearable or designed to wear on clothing. No commercial casts, molds or production work is allowed.

METAL
Metalworks include all non-sculptural, non-jewelry works crafted from metals. Metals may be cast, hammered or embossed to feature raised designs. No production studio work is allowed.

MIXED MEDIA
Works that incorporate more than one type of material to create one work of art or craft is to be entered in this category. Both 2D and 3D pieces are included. Materials that are used must be evident in the finished work.

PAINTING
Original works created in oils, acrylics, and watercolors are to be entered in this category.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographic prints made from the artist’s original image, whether from traditional negatives or digital files and manipulated with computer programs, are included in this category. Photographers are required to disclose both their creative and printing processes. All images must be processed by the artist or under his/her direct supervision.

SCULPTURE
Original, three-dimensional works of any material or combination of materials are to be entered in this category.

WOOD
Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine worked, turned or carved are accepted in the wood category.

PRIZES & AWARDS FOR 2019:
A total of six awards will be given during the festival: Best of Show, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and 3 Juror's Awards. 3 of the 5 juror's will return to the festival to judge on site and hand out awards. Best of Show, 2nd and 3rd Place winners will receive an invitation to exhibit the following summer and will have their booth fees waived. The 3 juror awards will receive an invitaion to exhibit the following summer, but booth fees will not be waived.

2018 Award Winners will not be subjected to the jury process. However, all winners must submit an application and create a profile via this site. Contact show director Chelsea Dalporto-McDowell at chelsea@crestedbutteartsfestival.com for directions on how to bypass jury fees if you were one of the six artists who received an award last summer.

SELECTION & NOTIFICATION:
The five member jury is comprised of working artists, art professionals and art patrons from the State of Colorado. The jury will view each artist's set of five images projected simultaneously in a horizontal grouping. All artist statements will be read while jurors are reviewing images, so be specific about your process. Additional information about individual images will be given to jurors upon request, but the identity of the artist will remain unknown. Decisions of the jury are final, with the top 165 artists receiving invitations to exhibit and an additional 75 artists wait listed.

Invitations will be issued in mid April, 2019. Those artists accepting invitations will be required to sign a contract and mail booth payments and clean up deposits or pay on line with a credit card, but you will still need to send in a security deposit. If you do not pay the security deposit before the show you need to bring a check to artist check inThe deadline for accepted artists to commit to exhibit, return a signed exhibitor contract and remit booth fee is May 28, 2019. Failure to communicate with show director by this date will result in the forfeiture of invitation. Corners are limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Contracts and payments will be date stamped as they arrive and corners given out according to date received.

Rules/Regulations
RULES OF SHOW:
1. The Crested Butte Arts Festival welcomes all artists in any fine art or fine craft medium, exhibiting his or her own handmade work of art. There are no quotas in any medium however the jury will be instructed to do their best to select a well balanced show. Approximately 165 artists will be accepted after a competitive jury process.

2. All art must be original in concept, design, and execution. We seek quality, originality, and creativity.

3. We do not accept any: manufactured items, ceramics cast from commercial molds, promotional postcards, books, decoupage, kits, imported, resale or mass produced items, silk screened T-shirts and clothing, pre-packaged foods, soaps or country crafts.

4. No Exhibitor can have more than 4 employees, including family members.

5. Reproductions are allowed, but the artist must fill the majority of his/her booth with originals and one of a kind art. Artists may only show work in categories and body of work selected by the Jury. All work exhibited must be of the quality, category and body of work shown in the images juried. Any artist who exhibits work significantly different than what they were juried in with will be made to remove the different items, will not be invited to participate in the future, and may be required to forfeit their booth fee and leave the festival.

6. Booths may not be shared. No more than two artists may collaborate on work. Both must sign the application and contract to exhibit and be present at the Festival.

7. All exhibiting artists must provide their own booths and display materials. Booths must be white and 10 feet x 10 feet. Booths must be properly weighted and weights, ropes, etc. must not extend past the perimeter of the 10 feet x 10 feet tent (or double tent if artist purchases this option). Exhibitors are encouraged to be prepared for inclement weather with appropriate rain covers, tie-downs and weights (required!). Artist MUST KEEP GUTTERS CLEAR in the event of rain. Please set your 10 x 10 booth up 12 inches away from the curb to prevent flooding and water blockages.

8. Tent awnings are allowed and must not extend off the front of tents any further than 2 feet. The awning installation must be something that can be removed quickly in the event of an emergency should an emergency vehicle need access to the festival grounds. No art is allowed to be placed under the tent awnings; all art work must be placed inside the perimeter of the 10 feet x 10 feet tent. Your awning/canopy/tent shall be fully secured before setting up anything else. Be sure that your method of securing your canopy/awning/tent to the ground does not create an additional risk.

9. The Arts Festival site does not allow for staking in, as stated in the Artist Contract: ANY PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE ARTIST’S ACTION SUCH AS STAKING, DIGGING, ATTACHING TO STRUCTURES, PAINT SPILLS OR STAINS, ETC., WILL BE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ARTIST. ANY FINANCIAL CLAIMS WILL BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE PARTY AT FAULT. Exhibitors must leave their space in the same condition in which they received it, free of trash or other debris.

10. Safety Control Crew will be in place to aid in crowd control, working with the vendors and artists and assisting with awning removal in the event of an emergency. Should an emergency occur that requires emergency vehicle access, the crew will work quickly with artists to bring down awnings so that the vehicle(s) may pass safely. In addition to monitoring for emergencies and potential awning removal, they will also monitor the festival to ensure dogs and bikes will not be on the festival grounds. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION:
Four images of current work and one booth image representative of work that you plan to display at the Festival are required for jurying. If a booth shot is not available, a grouping of work is acceptable. All images are juried anonymously so please be sure your name or business name does not appear in the image or image title.

A $35 non refundable jury fee is required when submitting your application. Jury fees may be paid by credit card or checks through ZAPP. Checks must be made to the Crested Butte Arts Festival and mailed to: PO Box 324, Crested Butte, CO 81224.

Participating artists will be required to have booths open and be present for the entire duration of the festival. Show hours are: Friday, August 2nd: 5-9 pm; Saturday, August 3rd: 10 am - 5 pm; Sunday, August 4th: 10 am - 5 pm.

SET UP INFORMATION:
Please plan to check in and pick up your artist package prior to setting up. Artist Check in will be located at the Crested Butte Community School, located on the right side of Hwy 135 as you head North from Gunnison (818 Red Lady Avenue). Check-in Dates are as follows: Thursday, August 1st: 5 – 7 pm; Friday, August 2nd: 8 am – 11 am. Two shifts for load-in on Friday, August 2nd will be strictly enforced and are as follows: Shift 1 is 9:00 am – 11:00 am and Shift 2 is 11:15 am – 1:15 pm. You will be assigned a shift based on your booth location. 

STRIKE INFORMATION:
NO VEHICLES MAY ENTER THE SITE UNTIL 6 PM on Sunday. Please have everything packed and dismantled prior to moving your vehicle on site. Hand carry and dolly out as much as you can to prevent gridlock and PLEASE be considerate of your fellow artists.
