Event Summary
The Devils Lake Festival of the Arts is a one-day juried fine art show located in the artist village of Manitou Beach, MI on the shores of Devils Lake. Manitou Beach is within an hours drive from the Jackson, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Toledo Metro areas. The village has a Nantucket resort feel and has a growing reputation as an up and coming art enclave that coexists with unique boutiques, eateries, art galleries, and Inns.The Festival is in it’s 6th year and continues to grow each year with over 4000 visitors attending last year. Besides the main focus of showcasing the artists, the Festival event also includes hands-on art activities for kids, demonstrations, music, dance, food and more. 
 
NEW in 2019! The festival committee is redesigning the village layout and expanding the number of artists booths to 60. To support the growth we have been working with local travel companies to promote one day bus trips that will include a visit to the festival as well as local wineries. Also, on the same day, the local farmers market will be holding a large “craft” festival in the cannery building. As a result of these and other projects we are working on, we are expecting an increase of at least 2500 visitors to our festival of the arts. 
 
A team of volunteers support our artists during set-up; provide breaks and refreshments throughout the day, and help with the teardown at the end of the day.

Check-in and Setup: Begins at 6:00 a.m.
Teardown time: 6:00 p.m.

Application Opens: November 5, 2018
Jury Dates: All applicants will be juried the month following their receipt of the application. Applications and payments cannot be made during the jury dates. The dates are as follows.

Accept Invitation and Purchase Deadline: We are asking invited artists to accept within two weeks from the date of the  invitation. An early bird booth discount is available for those that purchase their booths during the month they receive the invitation. Final deadline for booth payments is June 7, 2019.

Accepted medium categories: 
Clay/Ceramics. Original clay or porcelain work that is functional or non-functional.
Digital Art. Original work that uses a computer as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. See Photography definition for clarification.
Drawing. Work created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pencil, wax, crayon, etc.
Fibers non-wearable. All work crafted from fibers including basketry, embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, tapestry and papermaking.
Fibers wearable. All work crafted from fibers including embroidery, weaving, knitting, sewing, and wearable art.
Glass. Functional and sculptural work is accepted.
Jewelry. Metal or non-metal
Mixed Media.  2 or 3 dimensional work that combines materials from two or more medias in one piece.
Painting. Acrylic, Oil, Gouache, Pastels and Watercolor paintings are accepted in this category.
Paper. Origami and other original pieces of art made strictly from paper.
Photography. Original images created/taken by the artist, both from film and original digital formats are included in this category. Photo collage and painting on photographs, which are traditional photographic processes, need to be in this category. Whether the work is produced in a traditional wet-darkroom or via digital processes, only “traditional” correction methods may be utilized. Work produced over and above that should apply in the Digital category. See Digital Art definition for clarification.
Print Making. Etching, engraving, silk-screening, stone and plate lithography, linoleum block or woodcut, etc. which have been properly signed and numbered.
Sculpture. Three-dimensional work using additive or subtractive processes in a single medium.
Wood. Original works that are hand-tooled, machine-worked, turned or carved.

Application image requirements: 6 images including 1 booth shot.

Electricity is not readily available so all artists must arrive fully charged and prepared. No generators are allowed.
 
Jury Information:
The 2019 Devil’s Lake Festival of the Arts will be comprised of approximately 60 Artist spaces. 

Jury Process:
The jury session is ongoing throughout the application process. The Jury consists of 3 members of the DLFA Artist Committee.
 
Artist applications will remain anonymous.
Scoring is 1 (low) to  5 (high). 
Jury scores are combined and averaged.
The final score is tallied and artists selected. The wait list is created based on the jury scores.
 ​Artists will be notified by email no later than the end  of the month following their application.

Jurying is anonymous so please remove any words or images that may allow jurors to identify yourself as the artist. This includes company name and signature.

Jury Award:
During the 2019 Devil’s Lake Festival of the Arts an on-site juror will evaluate each artist. The top scoring artist will receive a $100 cash prize based on design, execution, and aesthetic appeal of the work as well as booth presentation.

Rules/Regulations
The Devils Lake Festival of the Arts is a selective fine art fair. Staff will visit participating artists’ booths periodically to ensure compliance with the rules.  Artists will be required to remove all work that is not in compliance.
  1. All work must be original, handcrafted work that complies with the media definitions listed.
  2. Exhibitors are responsible for collecting and paying all applicable Sales Tax (MI 6%).
  3. Artists may only show work in categories approved by the Jury.
  4. Artists should prominently display an Artist Statement.
  5. All exhibitors are expected to provide their own display, chairs, tables and tent.
  6. Booth should remain open during posted fair hours and tended to by the artists.
  7. Artists should wear lanyards provided by the Devil’s Lake Festival of the Arts at all times and return the lanyards at the end of the event.
  8. Spaces are pre-assigned at the sole discretion of the Devil’s Lake Festival of the Arts committee and are not transferable.
  9. All payments must be made through the Zapplication site with Visa, MasterCard or PayPal.

Wait List Policy:
Artists will be assigned wait list numbers by category. When a wait list space becomes available, we will call and leave a message, in addition to sending an email. You have 24 hours to respond whether you'd like to take the space or not.

Reproduction Policy:
Reproductions are allowed if they are reproductions of the artist’s original work and if the artist includes original work in their booth display. 
 

Booth Information
10x10 booths: $100 ($75 early bird paid within month of invitation/acceptance)
10x20 booths: $150 ($125 early bird paid within month of invitation/acceptance)

No refunds.

Setup for the event will start at 6:00 a.m. on June 15, 2019.
