Event Summary
The Ann Arbor State Street Hand-Crafted Marketplace takes place adjacent to the award winning Ann Arbor State Street Fine Art Fair in Ann Arbor’s historic theater district. For more than 50 years, this fair and three others, collectively known as the Ann Arbor Art Fair, have attracted over 400,000 fair goers to the streets of Ann Arbor, Michigan for one of the most admired and largest arts and craft fair destinations in the country.

New in 2019, the Ann Arbor State Street Hand-Crafted Marketplace is being to run concurrently with the State Street Fine Art Fair. It will offer artists, artisans and craftspersons an opportunity to showcase, build awareness and value for handmade goods as an alternative to mass-produced items.

The State Street District works jointly with the other three art fairs to market the Ann Arbor Art Fair (as it is known to/recognized by the public). The power of the collective gives a large amount of area marketing for the event. Marketing pieces include:

  • Submit 5 images (four of your work plus one of your booth is required)  
  • Applications submitted without a booth image will be returned to await the booth image.
On-site Exhibiting
  • All work exhibited must be original work, hand crafted and created by the artist, artisan, craftsperson.
  • No mass, automated machine produced, buy/sell, vintage or resale items are permitted items.
  • Only work representative of the artists’ slides are permitted. If exhibited works differ significantly from the images submitted, the artist may be asked to leave and forfeit fees.
  • Artist, artisan or craftsperson must represent their own work and be present the entire four days of the fair. No agents are allowed.  A two person partnership producing a single product may qualify as a single exhibitor.
  • Artist, artisan or craftsperson may not exhibit in any of the other fairs in Ann Arbor that take place at the same time as the State Street Art Fair.
  • Artist, artisan or craftsperson may jury in more than one category, but not with the same body of work. Only one application may be submitted per body of work with a jury fee for each category. Crafters must use the same name for both applications.
  • Crafters whose work is selected in multiple categories will exhibit in one booth space.
2-D Crafters
  • Multiples of prints, digital art and photographs must be presented as limited editions not to exceed 250, be signed and numbered by the artist, artisan or craftsperson and be framed or matted and displayed in a suitable portfolio or stand.
  • For printmakers, if you handcraft the plates, stone or screen, the printed result is considered an original multiple, to be properly registered, signed and numbered.
  • The State Street District Fair prohibits the exhibition or sale of any commercial reproductions of paintings, drawings, prints, digital art, photographs or any other fine art media (including offset reproductions which have been hand colored) within the Fine Art or Hand-Crafted sections.
  • Ceramics must be handmade and individually designed by the artist, artisan or craftsperson. No works made from commercial kits, molds, patterns, stencils or prefabricated forms are allowed.
  • Functional ceramics are considered a “fine craft,” therefore handcrafted multiples of essentially the same item such as bowls, cups, plates and tiles may be exhibited.
  • Jewelers shall not use any commercially fabricated forms or settings.
  • Only artist, artisan or craftsperson accepted in the jewelry category may display and sell jewelry.
  • Leatherworks shall not be crafted using machine tooling, machine-screened patterns or other forms of mass production. 
Prohibited and Not Eligible Work or Items for the Fine Art or Hand-crafted Market Place
  • The State Street Art Fair prohibits the exhibition or sale of any commercial reproductions of paintings, drawings, prints, digital art, photographs or any other fine art media (including offset reproductions which have been hand colored).
  • No commercial reproductions or embellished commercial products are allowed.
  • Works which are mass-produced or manufactured.
  • Art or items works made from molds, kits or other commercial methods.
  • Taxidermy.
  • Paintings on velvet.
  • Manufactured or kit jewelry.
  • Candles, scents or oils.
On-site Registration
Picture ID is required for registration and must be presented upon the request of Fair Staff at any time during the fair.

Any artist, artisan or craftperson leaving before the end of the show will be unable to exhibit for two years.

Booth Information
All booth material, tarps, and other coverings shall be fire retardant or resistant. All roofs, walls, panels, coverings and tents shall be fire retardant or resistant. A manufacturer tag or paperwork certifying that all materials are fire retardant or resistance must be available on-site.

Booth Information
Artist, artisan or craftsperson must supply their own booth structures with weights, or rent one for the five days through the State Street Art Fair.

Weights are mandatory throughout the fair and the responsibility of the artist.
E­ZUp canopies will no longer permitted on portions of Maynard and William.

Location Requests
Artist, artisan or craftsperson may request amenities and booth space locations during the application process. While we cannot guarantee that we can meet your requests, we make every effort to place the artist in the general location that is requested.

Fees must be paid before locations are assigned. Once accepted into the fair, the sooner your fee is paid the better chance you have of securing your preferred location.

Reinvited artists (previously showing the State Street Fine Art Fair) are priority placed. If you are a returning artist, please follow the instructions in the invitation email to request your booth location.

Compliance and Lawfulness
Artist, artisan or craftsperson shall abide by all local ordinances, regulations and rules. Including but not limited to No Firearms within the Fair boundary, no open flames in tents, etc.

All exhibiting artists are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism. The SSAF will inspect booths on-site to ensure rules and standards. The SSAF reserves the right to remove the vendor if regulations stated in this prospectus and otherwise made contractually are not adhered to or whose conduct and merchandise is unacceptable.

Artist violating the rules of this fair may be asked to leave and will become ineligible for readmission to future events.

Waitlist Artists ­
In the event space does become available, artists will be notified and all fees will be due immediately.

Artists are not permitted to relocate space during the event. Any relocation of assigned booth location will be at the discretion of the State Street District.

Submitting this application is a commitment to the State Street District Art Fair rules.
Any additional Rules/Regulations for on­site exhibition and jurying will be provided on­site at registration.

Fees, payments and refunds

            $800 Basic 10x10 in­line booth
  • Add­on Fees and Amenities
           $70 Corner Booth (the booth will have two (2) ­sides available for presentation to the public
  • Refunds
  • Cancellations with refund, less $100 administration fee, will be honored until May 30.
  • Refunds are issued by check and will be mailed to the artist's address provided in ZAPP.
  • All cancellations/refund requests must be made via email with a brief explanation for cancellation.
