JURY DETAILS

Event Summary
The 45th annual Art in the Barn juried fine art festival will be held the weekend of September 28th and 29th on the sprawling grounds of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL, located 35 miles northwest of Chicago. This is an open-air event held in a collection of rustic barns and farm buildings as well as artist-provided tents.  What began in 1974 as a modest art show has grown to be one of the most unique, high quality, and well-attended art festivals in the Chicago area with over 175 juried artists exhibiting their work.   Art in the Barn has a rich history of drawing people and families together to enjoy the exhibition and sale of fine art as well as live music and entertainment, food from a variety of vendors, and children's art, all in a picturesque country setting.

Art in the Barn is a major fund-raising event of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.  The proceeds from the sale of artist booths are used to fund scholarships for students pursuing careers in healthcare and to support hospital expansion initiatives and programs designed to enhance the patient experience.

Note:  The 20% commission paid in prior years on all artist sales has been eliminated and will no longer be collected by Art in the Barn.

Artists can apply in multiple categories by submitting separate applications and fees for each; however, the same body of work cannot be submitted in more than one category.  The jury fee is waived for 2018 award winners.

Jury Process
Submitted images of the artist's work for consideration by the jury must be representative of the artwork to be exhibited and must be clear and sharply focused.  The artist statement on the application, which summarizes the artist's materials and how they are used, should be detailed and clear as it may be read during the jury process.

The artist submissions are organized by medium.  All five (5) images - including the booth shot - will be simultaneously projected and juried by professional art experts, who will score each artist's work in each medium.  Artists are then ranked numerically based on the jury score.  The artists with the highest scores in each medium are invited to participate in the show and the remaining artists are placed on a Wait List.

Tips for Photographing and Submitting Artwork
To ensure the artist's work can be viewed in its best possible light, the images need to be large enough for the details to be apparent.  Similarly, proper lighting and exposure can bring out the fine details and highlight contrast and textures.  The images should be sharp, crisp, and in focus so that the jury is not straining to make out the artwork.  Consistency in look and feel of the images (background, lighting, theme, size) will add to the professionalism of the submission.  The jury is looking at each of the submissions for a relatively short period of time, so first impressions are key.

Notification of Invitation Status
Artists will be notified of their invited / waitlisted status via ZAPP® email by Monday, June 10, 2019.  The deadline to accept the invitation and purchase booth space is Monday, July 15, 2019.  Invited artists who do not meet the purchase deadline will be moved to the Wait List.

Wait List Policy
Artists who are placed on the Wait List are contacted via ZAPP® email and invited to the show as cancellations occur in the same category.

This will be the 21st year for Best of Show and Best of Medium ribbon awards at Art in the Barn and the 4th year for monetary awards.  Artistic Excellence awards in the amount of $150 each will be given in the categories of Acrylic, Ceramics, Drawing, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Mixed Media, Oil, Pastels, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Watercolor, and Wood.  The Best of Show award in the amount of $500 will presented in celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Art in the Barn.  Best of Show and Best of Medium award winners will receive automatic invitations to Art in the Barn 2020 along with a waiver of the jury fee.

Booth Information
The Art in the Barn venue is very unique in that it offers both outdoor spaces to accommodate 10'x10' artist-provided tents and a variety of indoor booths.  The outdoor spaces are on asphalt and grass and artists are encouraged to sufficiently secure their tents with weights for protection against the winds.  There is no electricity available to the tent spaces; however, artists can bring their own battery-powered fans or lighting.

The indoor spaces are housed in barns and farm buildings and each contains an electrical outlet.  Wall space is very limited in many of the indoor spaces, so it is recommended that artists use their own panels to both display their artwork and separate their booths from other artists.  All panels, tables, chairs, and display material must be provided by the artist.

Booths are first assigned to artists who are returning from last year's show.  Spaces for new artists are then assigned in a manner to spread out the different mediums throughout the show.

Requests for specific booth spaces, double booths, and special needs should be included on the application form under 'Special Needs and Requests.'  The Art in the Barn committee will try to honor special requests; however, it is not always possible or guaranteed.

Indoor Booth Description
The indoor booths are housed in the following farm buildings and barns:

Corn Crib:  This is a long narrow building housing 16 spaces on either side of a center aisle.  Each space is approximately 15' long and 3' wide with walls soaring 16' high.  Artwork is displayed directly on the walls, so panels are not needed.  All of the spaces in the Corn Crib are priced as standard indoor spaces (see below).

Deck:  This is on the opposite side of the Corn Crib and houses 17 spaces each about 9'x11' on either side of a middle aisle.  The spaces on the west side of the aisle have very tall walls where artwork can be displayed; however, display panels are advised for separating the booths.  There are no walls on the east side of the Deck, so these spaces are suitable for artists displaying artwork that does not need wallspace.  All of the spaces on the Deck are priced as premium indoor spaces (see below).

Lower Barn:  This is a long building housing 41 spaces, each approximately 64 square feet.  The space sizes vary, so flexible displays work best.  Wall space is very limited in the Lower Barn, so panels are needed for displaying artwork requiring a flat wall.  Spaces on the East side of the Lower Barn open to the outdoors.  All of the spaces in the Lower Barn are priced as standard indoor spaces (see below).

Machine Shed:  This is a large building which houses 16 spaces, each approximately 80 square feet.  Each space has a back wall; however, display panels work best for hanging artwork.  All spaces in the Machine Shed are priced as standard indoor spaces (see below).

Mill Room:  This building can be accessed from the Corn Crib, the Deck, and from its own entrance.  The seven  spaces are of varying dimensions, but a few have walls for displaying artwork.  MR01, MR02, and MR03 are priced as premium indoor spaces while the remaining booths are priced as standard indoor spaces (see below).

Upper Barn:  This building is a large barn, housing 14 spaces of varying dimensions.  While each space has a wall, display panels are most often used to hang the artwork.  UB01-UB04, UB10, and UB14 are priced as standard indoor spaces and UB05-UB09, UB11-UB13 are priced as premium indoor spaces (see below)
